A Guide to Realigning Life’s Compass
When life feels out of alignment or decisions seem difficult, a powerful way to reconnect with purpose is by clarifying your core values.
At The Harvest Clinic, we use values-based activities to support clients in rediscovering what truly matters in their lives.
In this second part of our Clarifying Your Values series, we’ll guide you through an exercise to help clarify your values across 8 key areas of life, exploring what each area means to you and what changes you might want to make to live more authentically.
Clarifying Values: The 8 Key Areas of Life
Our lives are often a balancing act across several key domains, each with unique demands and opportunities for fulfillment. Reflecting on these areas can bring valuable insights into what drives you, what brings satisfaction, and what might need adjustment.
Here are the areas to consider:
Leisure
What role does leisure play in your life? Think about how you spend your free time and if it replenishes or depletes you.
Intimate Relationships
Reflect on what kind of partner you want to be and what qualities are important in your closest relationships.
Work/Career
Your career can often be a big part of your identity. Consider what you want your work life to stand for and how it aligns with your values.
Family Relationships
Family can be a source of strength, but it can also challenge our values. Think about the person you want to be within your family and what you want these relationships to represent.
Personal Health
Health is foundational to living a fulfilling life. Think about the lifestyle habits and practices that are meaningful to you and how they align with your goals for well-being.
Learning/Education
Lifelong learning is crucial for growth. Reflect on your commitment to learning and how it fits with your values.
Social/Other Relationships
Outside of family and intimate relationships, your social circle also impacts your well-being. Consider the kind of friend, neighbor, or colleague you want to be.
Spirituality
For many, spirituality provides a deeper sense of purpose and belonging. Reflect on what spirituality means to you and how it shapes your life.
Reflective Questions for Each Area
To dive deeper into each area, try asking yourself these questions:
What kind of person do I want to be in this area of life?
What do I want to stand for in this part of my life?
What actions am I currently taking that might be inconsistent with these values?
For example, if health is a core value, you might identify areas where current habits don’t support your goals. If family relationships are a priority, you might reflect on how much quality time you spend with family versus other commitments.
Using This Activity as a Foundation for Therapy
Identifying your values and understanding where they align or conflict with your actions is a powerful starting point for therapy. By highlighting areas that need attention, we can use this values-based approach to shape a personalized treatment plan that supports your goals and helps you live in a way that feels true to yourself.
Our clinicians at The Harvest Clinic are here to help you explore this further, offering guidance and strategies for realigning your actions with your values. If you’re ready to explore this journey of self-discovery, don’t hesitate to reach out.
Together, we’ll work to build a life that reflects who you genuinely want to be.
