With Practical Exercises: Stepping into a New Chapter of Your Life

At The Harvest Clinic, we often hear the phrase, “If you base who you will be on who you’ve been, you will only see more of what you’ve seen.”

This concept encourages us to see ourselves not as fixed or limited by past experiences, but as dynamic beings capable of transformation. Life can be viewed as an unfolding story, and the pages of your future remain unwritten. How will you fill them?

Today, we’ll explore the concept of writing your own story with practical exercises, including a powerful visualization of imagining your life as a book.

Through these activities, you’ll discover how to shift from a past-focused mindset to one that embraces possibility and growth—Discovering Values Through Unwritten Chapters.

Discovery Exercise: How To Discover Your Values Through Unwritten Chapters

  • Exercise 1: Imagining the Next Chapter

Begin with a reflective visualization exercise. Imagine your life as a book with chapters, each one representing different stages, moments, or shifts. Now consider the chapters that are already written—your past experiences, achievements, mistakes, and lessons.

Now, let’s look forward. If you could fast-forward and read ahead in this book, what would the unwritten chapters say? Here’s a series of questions to help guide your imagination:

  • What would you want to see written about the next chapter of your life?

  • What accomplishments, relationships, or personal transformations would you want to look back on with pride?

  • What would be the main themes of this chapter?

  • How would you have grown, and what values would you have stayed true to?

This exercise helps you avoid being limited by hindsight, instead allowing yourself to envision possibilities unrestrained by the past. Take a few moments to journal your thoughts.

  • Exercise 2: Reflecting on Values Hidden in Hindsight

The stories we tell ourselves are often rooted in past experiences, and they can sometimes reinforce limiting beliefs. But in these stories lie clues to our deeper values, principles that we truly care about but may not have recognized yet.

  • Steps:

  1. Reflect on a challenging experience from your past. Try to approach it from a neutral perspective, focusing on what it might reveal about what you truly value.

  2. Identify hidden values: For example, a difficult relationship might reveal a value for connection and mutual respect, or a career setback might illuminate a value for growth and purpose.

  3. List these values and consider how they might play a guiding role in your unwritten chapters.

This process can help you turn past hardships into stepping stones, offering clarity about what truly matters to you and how you want to move forward.

  • Exercise 3: Re-classifying Goals with a Values-Driven Lens

We often set goals based on what we think we should do, but aligning them with our core values can add meaning and resilience.

  • Steps:

    1. Choose a few current goals: List some personal or professional goals you’re working on or hoping to achieve.

    2. Evaluate these goals in terms of values: Reflect on whether these goals align with the values you uncovered in the previous exercise. For example, if you value kindness, how might your goals embody this in practice? If you value creativity, are your goals reflective of this trait?

    3. Re-classify your goals by focusing less on the outcome and more on how they reflect your values. If a goal doesn’t align, consider reshaping it.

Realigning goals with values helps ensure that you’re building a future based on genuine desires, not external pressures or past fears.
