What is Bulk-Billed Psychology?
Bulk billing is a payment option where your psychologist bills Medicare directly for your session. This means you don’t have to pay anything out of pocket—Medicare covers the full cost.
Medicare currently offers 10 psychology sessions per calendar year under a Mental Health Care Plan (MHCP) from your GP. If you see one of our bulk billing psychologists, these 10 sessions will be provided at no cost to you.
If you choose to see one of our more experienced or specialist clinical psychologists, you’ll still receive a Medicare rebate, which helps reduce the cost of each session." then have a button that says "find the right fit" which takes them to the bulk billing vs gap fee psychologist section of the page
Bulk Billed Vs Gap Fee
What's the difference?"
At The Harvest Clinic, we offer psychology sessions that are fully covered by Medicare, so if you're eligible, you won’t need to pay anything. These bulk billed sessions are with our qualified psychologists who provide caring, professional support. If you’d prefer to see one of our more experienced psychologists—like a Clinical Psychologist or Psychologists with more specialist training—there’s an out of pocket fee of $65 to $100 after the Medicare rebate. Even then, it’s still much cheaper than the standard rate of $315 recommended by the Australian Psychological Society.
Bulk Billing sessions might be right for you if
You are experiencing financial
hardship
You're new to therapy and want to get started without financial barriers
You'd prefer to prioritise affordability
while still receiving professional support
You're looking for evidence- based care
Gap Fee sessions might be
right for you if
You value working with a highly experienced or specialist psychologist
You've tried therapy before but
are looking for deeper, lasting progress
You're facing complex or long- standing challenges that need tailored support
You want access to advanced,
evidence-based therapeuticapproaches
Which Option Should I Choose?
Still not sure which one to choose?
Think of it like taking your car to a mechanic. All qualified mechanics can service your vehicle, change the oil, fix the brakes, and keep things running smoothly. That’s like our bulk billed psychologists—they’re fully trained, registered, and equipped to support a wide range of mental health needs.
But sometimes, your car has a complex issue. Maybe it’s been misfiring for a while, or other fixes haven’t worked. That’s when you might go to a specialist—someone with years of experience, who’s worked on that exact model before, or who’s trained in high-performance tuning. That’s our gap fee psychologists—they bring deeper expertise, advanced qualifications, and experience with complex, longstanding, or specialised concerns like trauma or neurodivergence.
If you’re after accessible, high-quality support, a bulk billed clinician is a great place to start. But if things have felt stuck or you’re dealing with something more specific, a gap fee clinician might be the better fit.

FAQs
-
What’s the difference between seeing a psychologist who bulk bills and one who charges a gap fee?The main difference lies in the psychologist's level of experience and specialization. Psychologists who bulk bill may be early-career or general psychologists, still providing high-quality, evidence-based care. Psychologists who charge a gap often have additional qualifications, clinical training, or specialist expertise (e.g., trauma, complex presentations, or specific populations). No matter who you see, all psychologists at The Harvest Clinic are fully registered and work under strict professional standards.

I was thinking of doing a health retreat, will this be the same? Most of the practitioners in this program have worked extensively at health retreats in Australia and across the world. Health retreats are a great way to kickstart your health, yet our experience has been that many people slide slowly back to old habits of poor health after returning home. Our hope here is to create gradual and enduring positive changes to your health that continues even after the program finishes. This program will include the key elements of education, personalized program development, and implementation that you will find at a health retreat, however the swimming pool, pre-cooked and catered meals and steam baths aren't here. You'll get access to the core pillars that will make a critical difference to your health, but it's not a holiday or a relaxing retreat, this is an intentional investment towards improving your wellbeing.
